A Recipe for Writing
Make coffee, add cream, enter writing sanctuary, leaving door ajar
ease down into writing chair, place notebook on lap.
Click favorite pen.
As words flow, meowing 18 lb. cat will jump onto chair, unbidden, and squeeze
next to writer, purrs should rev up to 2000 ppm, purrs per minute, .
Ignore for one minute, or as long as possible.
Swear under breath (loudly is ok), place book and pen
on adjacent table, pulling cat onto lap.
Surrender free will.
Hugging cat, apply ‘scratch-under-chin-rub-belly’ routine for 2-3 minutes
until purring reaches 3000 ppm, ear plugs recommended.
Release creature to floor.
Cat will stretch out, performing ablutions and, tail still twitching,
secure a quiet corner to nap undisturbed for up to four hours.
Pick up notebook and pen, commence writing.
Repeat as needed for additional cats.
Optional ingredients:
1. Substitute tea, wine or hard liquor for coffee and creamer as needed.
2. Substitute dogs, gerbils, children, partners or roommates for cats, applying appropriate routines. Application times may need to be increased for larger creatures.
